RIJSTTAFEL ANYONE?

Rijsttafel (rice table) is a Dutch specialty that originated in the Dutch colonies of Indonesia.  It usually consists of many, as many as 40, different dishes  accompanied by rice with a multitude of spices in the dishes.  The small portions are meat, poultry, vegetables, nuts, fruit all dolled up with layers of spice.  The spices range from mild to DANGEROUS.

Bob and Joan's last night demanded a great night out.  Our friends Jim and Nanny joined us for a special dinner at Tempoe Doeloe.  This restaurant is noted for its rijsttafel.  This past year Anthony Bourdain featured this restaurant on his food show "Layover."

We ordered the Grand Rijsttafel which included 25 courses.  Joan ordered cod because she wasn't sure about the spice.  Since I have that ginger allergy the chef chose courses without the ginger for my special courses.  Everyone else had the Grand which gradually moves from mild to very spicy.  Bob and Jim were brave enough to try the DANGEROUS dish and lapped it up.  They probably could have had more.  Anyway, more food then one could eat.  We were there about 2 1/2 hours.

Dessert was both delicious and artistic.  Ray has pictures that pretty much do them justice.

There are a few pictures of our Monday night dinner out...Tapas Towers and wine.    Cute cafe and Ray thought the wait staff was equally as cute.
