July 10, 2025 New York City day 1
We were off to New York to see the Cubs & Yankees on Saturday the 12th. But of course there were also paintings to be seen. This began when I found out that a Caravaggio painting “Holy Family with St. John the Baptist” that we hadn’t seen was on display at the Metropolitan Museum in NY. I contacted the Museum and they told me it would be on display at ‘least’ to the end of July. The Cubs were playing the Yankees on July 11-13, so that settled it. Sue of course made all the reservations and bought all the tickets to the game and the museums. We were going to see a game on Saturday the 12th. We took an 8:55 AM flight on Thursday the 10th and arrived at LaGuardia around noon. It took a little over an hour to get to our hotel. After we checked in we decided to walk to the Metropolitan Museum. Well that turned out to be quite a walk through Central Park. The distance was 1.2 miles, but the real issue was that it seemed to be up hill most of the way across the park. We had to sit down and rest about half way through the park, but we eventually made it to the Met. The Met has 12 “1001” paintings, we’ve seen 11, and the 12th was NOT on display. And it has obviously never been on display on our 6 previous visits!! Enough of my complaints, for now.
There were two other paintings that are always on display at the Met that are substitutes for two Egyptian tomb paintings in the “1001” book. Both paintings are in tombs that are closed to visitors. The first painting is “Sailing Barge of Amenhotep Huy”, in Theban Tomb TT40. Huy lived during the end of the 18th Dynasty during the reign of Tutankhamun, King Tut. The tomb is dated c.1330 BCE. The 18th dynasty 1550 to 1292 BC, is known as the first dynasty of the New Kingdom, marking a peak in ancient Egyptian power and culture. This is #749/1001 that we’ve seen.
The 2nd substitute is “Goldsmiths at Work” New Kingdom (Dynasty 18) the tomb of Nebamun and Ipuky, in Theban Tomb TT 181 at Thebes ca. 1390–1349 B.C. during the reigns of Amenhotep III to Akhenaten, roughly around 1390–1349 BC. This is #750/1001. Both paintings are in a very large room with many, many other copies of tomb paintings. Just be thankful that I didn’t take photos of all the other works like I typically do.
July 11, 2025 New York City 4 Museums today
Today we went to four museums: The Met, The Frick, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and The Whitney. I can’t believe I didn’t take ANY photos at the The Met!! This is really a world class collection. If I had started taking photos, we wouldn’t have gotten to the other museum. The Frick Museum is just down the street from The Met. It has two 1001 paintings that we saw in Oct. 2013. The good news is that the museum doesn’t allow photographs. The MoMA is next in line down 5th Avenue. MoMA has 48 1001 paintings, we’ve seen 31 that includes 3 substitutes. The 17 paintings we haven’t seen have NEVER been on display when I’ve checked, and you can imagine my OCD has me checking at least several times a year. The Whitney Museum is a little further south and almost on the Hudson River. It has one 1001 painting that hadn’t been on display on our prior visits, but it was on display today, so this got our total to 751/1001.
I will save you from the details, but we will probably not get to see a total of 800 paintings. There are too many paintings in private collections, paintings museums just don’t put on display, and places we will never get to. But it is still great fun tracking the 1001 down, and seeing many wonderful works of art.

July 12, 2025 Cubs vs Yankees at Yankee Stadium
We took two subways from the hotel to Yankee Stadium, it took about half an hour. We got there around noon, and there were already lines to get into the stadium. It didn’t take long to get into the stadium. There were enough people taking tickets that the line never stopped. Once inside we wound our way up to the 3rd level to find our seats. On Friday the Yankees won 11-0, so we were hoping for better results today, and the Cubs won 5-2. The Cubs led the entire game. It was a great day, although I did get a little sunburned. You can see what I mean in the photo: legs just burned from top of the knees to where the shorts started, about 6” and my arms and the back of my hands, but not my fingers.
After the game Sue searched for churches with a 5 or 5:30 Saturday Mass. She found one with a 5 PM mass so we set off to find it. Short story we found the church, and all the gates were locked. So then we were off to another church with a 5:30 Mass. We found it, and the gate at the front was locked, but when we walked around the side we found the door was open. There were only about 15 people in the church, and one guy was wearing a MAGA hat. After Mass we went back to our hotel to find out where we get some ‘New York’ pizza. There was a pizza place just a few blocks from the hotel that the desk man at the desk said was rated a 3.5/5. That was good enough for us. We each had a piece of pepperoni and sausage pizza, and it was good. Then it was back to the hotel.
Sunday we had an 11:25 flight from LaGuardia to O’Hare at 1:03 PM. The only bad news was I lost my Global Entry Card somewhere along the way. It is tough being me. But it was still a great trip. Update I was able to get a new Global Entry Card.
