Thursday in Brussels
We went back to Brussels for Valentine's day. The train ride was just under 2 hours. Sue picked out a wonderful little hotel in the center of Brussels. The Hotel Orts has 14 rooms, a restaurant with many good reviews and only €109 including breakfast. We dropped our bag at the hotel before noon and went out to see the sights. It was cold and rainy, not the best day for sightseeing, but that didn't stop us. We walked to the Great Place in the center of the city, only about 10 minutes from the hotel. There are photos and a motion sickness inducing video of the Great Place. We took the trams out to see the Atomium at the former sight of the 1958 World's Fair. The tram ride required a transfer from the #3 to the #7. This turned out to be harder than we anticipated. The transfer point was outside and it was cold, windy and rainy. We waited for at least 20 minutes, and in that time there were three #7s going the wrong way. We finally gave up and took the #3 to the end of the line. From there we walked another 15 minutes in the rain to the park. It really wasn't all that bad, but I just like to complain, just ask Sue. The Atomium was actually pretty interesting. The elevator ride was neat, and since I've learned how to take videos you can have a look. The tram ride back was uneventful. We went back to the hotel to check in and have a beer, great Belgian beer! The hotel manager told us that Steven Spielberg was shooting a movie about Julian Assange right next door. There where movie trucks up and down the street, and grips moving equipment in and out of the building next door. After our beer we went out for more sightseeing. In Brussels you have to go see the Manikin Pis, so we did. We've seen it before, but we needed a photo for the blog. It really is an underwhelming sight, but as I said, it is a 'must see' in Brussels. We walked around to a few more places, a covered shopping galleria and restaurant row. I didn't take any photos and I'll spare you the descriptions. We went back to the hotel for their special Valentine Day Prix Fixe Dinner. I'll let Sue handle that in a separate post.
