Munchen & Wien (Vienna) Road Trip
We decided to go for a BMW on this road trip over the Peugeot we had for Belgium.
(We actually ended
up with a Volkswagen Polo.) I
photographed the BMW at BMW Welt in Munchen.
We got a surprise when we told the car rental company that we were going
to Germany and Austria. We had to have a
car with snow tires. Austria apparently
requires them in the winter, and the damage insurance is void if you have and
an accident without snow tires. This
cost us an additional €20 a day, or €120 for seven days! Sue was not happy, and she let them know about
it.
The up side to this was that the only car available with
snow tires had an automatic transmission for which we didn’t have to pay extra. We drove 8 ½ hours to Munchen on the first
day and stayed there three nights. The next
city was Wien (Vienna); on the 4 ½ hour drive there we stopped in Salzburg to
see one of our paintings at Mozart’s birthplace. We stayed three nights in Klosterneuburg, a
suburb of Wien. The next stop was Frankfurt
with a quick stop in Nuremburg on the way; both cities have paintings on our
list. The driving time from Wien to Frankfurt was about seven
hours. The
final drive home from Frankfurt should have
been only four hours, but it snowed Friday so the drive was about six
hours. Almost all of the driving was on motorways at speeds of 120
km/hr (75 mph) to 130 km/hr (80 mph). In Germany most of the motorways
don't have a speed limit, so you have to be careful about getting into
the left hand lane. There is always someone going 90-100 mph.

It was great seeing you on Skeip (sp?) yesterday and thank you so much for the Christmas ornament and staying up to be with ould friends. Miss you tho.....
