Friday afternoon we went out to
look for more Blue Plaques in the nearby neighborhood. The plaques are thick in the Fitzroy Square
area that is about a 15 minute walk from this apartment. The plaques for Joseph Lister (antiseptic
procedures) and Henry Adams (US Ambassador and grandson and great-grandson of
two US presidents) were covered by scaffolding, otherwise we were pretty
successful.
Saturday we were off to Highgate
Cemetery. We have been to the East side
before, but this time we signed up for the tour of the West Cemetery. The tour was terrific (have you noticed that
just about everything we do is terrific?
Maybe that’s why we do these things.).
The place is still being used, but it had been abandoned for many years
so it is overgrown and many of the monuments are overgrown and many other
monuments have deteriorated in the 150+ years since it first opened. There are large trees everywhere. The West side is the oldest part of the
cemetery. The volunteer guide is a
member of The Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust maintains the place. The photos tell most of the story. But as we were nearing the end of the tour
and getting back to the entrance Sue said that there must be somebody named Wynn
buried here. Well two minutes later as
the guide is finishing the tour Sue spots the grave of Arthur Henry Ashford
WYNN. So I google this guy, and this is
where the karma continues. Besides being
a scientist he was also a RUSSIAN spy!
Part of the reason to visit is to take my photo (again) at the grave of
Karl Marx with my Red Star bag, and it turns out that a guy with my last name
was a Russian spy. You can’t make this
stuff up.

We tried again to go to the
Natural History Museum and there was a very long line, so we came home had
lunch and then went out to find more plaques. I’ve added the photos without comments, you
can google them if you are interested.
I also added photos of the
Michelin Building. It is now a
restaurant. Here is link to the
Wikipedia page about the building: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelin_House
Stella McCartney, Paul’s daughter
