We got lucky today! We went to the Art Institute of Chicago with
Sue’s cousin Judith to see a new exhibition “America after the Fall.” Basically it is art in America during the
Great Depression. There were two
paintings on the 1001 list! What was
equally as amazing was I recognized them!
We hadn’t investigated anything about the exhibition before our
visit. So now we are up to 605/1001.
Getting to 700 will be very, very
tough. We have seen most of the “easy”
paintings. The Museum of Modern Art
(MoMA) in New York has 47 paintings on the list, and we’ve seen 24 of
them. There are typical only a couple of
the remaining 23 ever on display, and believe me I check pretty often. There are only a few museums that have more
than a few paintings on the list that we haven’t seen, and we haven’t seen them
because they don’t often have them on display.
We have been to the Pompidou in Paris many times and there are still nine
we haven’t seen. The Hamburger
Kunsthalle has 24 paintings on the list and we’ve seen nine of them. The gallery is being refurbished and is “supposed”
to be fully open sometime in 2018. The
Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam took over 10 years to be refurbished, so I wouldn’t
hold my breath. It’s nice to think of
the Germans as efficient, but google the status of the new airport in
Berlin. The National Museum in Stockholm
has 15 paintings, and we’ve seen two at other museums. It is also being refurbished and scheduled to
open in 2018. There aren’t any other
museums that have as many as 10 paintings.
