Second
post today November 8th
Our
last day in Lisbon, so of course we are off to see two museums. To get to the first museum we took our FIRST
Uber ride. Our flight leaves Wednesday
at 7:15 and the Metro doesn’t start until 6:30.
Sue ordered the Uber and it took about 12 minutes to arrive. Our driver was a very nice young man from
Angola. He has been driving for Uber for
about three months. The ride was a lot
faster than the bus, we arrived at the museum by 10:30. So now we all set for tomorrow.
The first,
the Monasterio of Jeronimos, Monastery of Jerome is not an art gallery. It is a 500 year old historical site that has
the tomb of Vasco de Gama. Vasco is
another guy I read about in grade school.
Prince Henry (1394-1460) and Vasco de Gama (1460-1524)
are two people who made Portugal a major power in the 15th and 16th centuries. How could we not visit the tombs of both
men? There was a small snag when we got
to the Monastery, there was a special Mass going on in the Church where de Gama’s
tomb is located. The Church would be
open to the public after 14:00, so we visited the Cloister of the Monastery. Then we took the bus to the Museum of Ancient
Art.
The Museum
of Ancient Art has many paintings by our Dutch and Flemish artists, so of
course I had to take more photos. Then
we had lunch at the museum, and the food was very good. The museum wasn’t crowded, but the restaurant
was. We took the bus back to the Monastery to see Vasco's tomb and take more photos. We took the bus home, and that is
where I saw that unusual tree that I photographed. It doesn’t take much to amuse me.
We packed
up and were ready to have Uber pick us up tomorrow morning at 5:00. Everything went well. The Uber driver today had only been driving
13 days. We arrived at the airport in
plenty of time. Our two hour flight to
London Heathrow was full, but the flight was fine. We had a pretty short layover at Heathrow,
but again everything went well. We flew
in a new 787. Sue had picked the exit
row, so we had plenty of leg room. The
flight landed about 40 minutes early, Jude picked us up and we then we were
home. It was another great trip.
Our next trip is to a tour to Israel in March. The first tour for us, so expect a lot of photos from the tour bus.
