Thursday May 25, Oslo

On Thursday our 10:15 train got us to Oslo, Norway around 14:15 in the afternoon.  Google Maps worked this time and we got to the Karl Johan Hotel in about 10 min. without any problems.  We checked in, dropped off our bags and set off for the National Museum.  There are five 1001 paintings at this museum, and their web site doesn’t tell if which paintings in the collection are on display.  I of course had emailed the museum back in November and asked if the 1001 paintings would be on display when we visited on May 24th.  I got an answer the next day telling me that the paintings would be on display.  We were still a bit nervous as we started exploring the museum, because we have been disappointed before when a painting “was going to be on display”.  Great news, all five of the 1001 paintings were on display!!!  It is interesting that two of these five 1001 paintings are by Edvard Munch.  The 1001 book has “The Scream” (his most famous) and “Girls on the Pier/Bridge” at the National Museum.  The brand new Munch Museum opened on October 22, 2021.  Fortunately for us Munch made several copies of each of the 1001 paintings, because the Munch Museum also has copies of our two 1001 paintings.  We found all five of the 1001 paintings, and a substitute for another 1001 painting that was NOT on display at the museum in Bergen, Norway.  It takes a 7+ hours by train from Oslo to Bergen, an overnight stay to visit Bergen, and another 7+ hr. train ride back to Oslo.  I don’t know if we would have made the trip IF the painting had been on display in Bergen.  But the painting wasn’t on display, so I counted the substitute (remember who makes the rules).  It was a pretty long day, so we headed back to our hotel.  Next door was a restaurant with outdoor tables so we sat down had a beer with some snacks.  Then it was back to our room to rest up a bit.  We went out a later to get a sandwich from a Subway that was located around the corner, and that was it for our day.
