We saw painting #478 at the Flowers Gallery in London today, “The Road to Zenica” by Peter Howson in 1994.  The book lists the painting as being at a commercial gallery, and this is the first commercial gallery listed in the book that actually still has the painting.  It is a very large painting 6.5’ x 10.5’.  At this scale the fear and/or terror of the people in the painting can really be sensed.  The adult features of the little boy and girl in the center of the painting conveys to me that these kids have been changed by their experiences, they are no longer children.

Once again we were shown the painting by a delightful you lady curator who knows art and art history.  I think she would have talked with us all afternoon.  One interesting thing she told us was the Peter Howson was an Official War Department Artist commissioned to paint pictures of the war in Bosnia.  I wonder if the US had official photographers for the “action” in Bosnia, let alone artists.  Tomorrow Bob & Joan arrive at Heathrow around 6:00 AM local time.  We’ll see how they feel when their body time is about 1;00 AM.
