9, 2017 St. Petersburg Hermitage: General Staff Building
and Winter Palace update

was even worse than usual with the number of photos, but what can you do? The cover photo is the Winter Palace. The Hermitage is a Yuuge Museum in several
buildings. The Winter Palace is where all the tours go,
and there are six paintings on the 1001 list, plus 10 on various other lists
I’m tracking that Sue doesn’t know about.
Okay, Sue knows, she just humors me.
The Winter Palace is actually several connected buildings and is very
crowded, so we started at the Hermitage General Staff Building which is on the
opposite of Alexander Square. It isn’t
empty, but not nearly as crowded. There
are four of the 1001 in this building.
The collection is fantastic.
There are entire rooms with paintings by Impressionist artist like
Monet, Cezanne and Manet. After we
completed the General Staff we went to the Winter Palace. Because we had bought the combined ticket we
were able to walk by the long lines and go right in. The crowds were much larger, and there is
more to see besides paintings. The
photos have most of the comments. Seeing
two fantastic museums in one day was an effort. We were tired when we finished, but we saw all
of our 1001 paintings. We also saw three
works by Leonardo, one from the book Paintings that Changed the World (PtCtW)
and five that are on Sue’s scarf of Old Masters, a terrific day. I don’t remember where or what we ate,
hopefully Sue can supply that information.
The
only painting we missed was “The Lute Player” by Caravaggio, so we may have to
come back. This is the link to the June 9th photos again
