April 16 Church of Saint Eutrope (post 1 of 3)
We gassed up Monday morning and headed to the Church of
Saint Eutrope in the small town of Les Salles-Lavauguyon. This 12th century church has a
1001 painting. The church is located
about 70 km from Montignac and Google Maps says it will take 2 hours to get
there. You can see we are not taking any
motor ways. We went from one small
village to another. The speed limit on
secondary roads is 90 km/hr (~55 mph), but approaching and leaving a village
the limit is 70 km/hr (~45 mph), and in the village it is 30 km/hr (~20 mph),
so you can see why it takes two hours.
Our painting is one of the frescos decorating the interior of the
church. It is the best preserved
painting in the building. Sue of course lit
a candle. After that brief stop we were
off to our Home Exchange in Le Mans; that was about 4.5 hours away.
The GPS system in our car could not find our home in Le
Mans. The house was on rue de Miror, but
the GPS would only show the street rue de Nieue Miror. So I had to enter the coordinates to get us
there. This wasn’t the only glitch that
we had with the GPS, but I’ll save those gripes for another post.
We found the house and unpacked, then we went out to the
grocery to stock up on beer and food.
Our exchange person was in Paris the week for work. She is pretty big on recycling, composting
and energy saving. Her TV is set up to
turn itself off after three hours, so if you want more TV you have to turn it
back on. There were no English stations,
but we are used to always having a TV on, and we can watch the news to see what
Trump is doing now. The TV did turn
itself off, and we could never get it back on.
We obviously did something wrong, but could never figure out what.
When I took the recycling outside I heard the distant roar
of motorcycles. The house was a few
miles from the Le Mans race track, and the Le Mans 24 Hour Motorcycle Race was
the next Saturday to Sunday. So of
course we were going to have to check out the track and its museum one day this
week.
